I've got a perl script that parses the files in the directory for image name
and then runs a bpimmedia against them to see if they exist in the catalog. I
use it with my DSSUs to make sure they've been duplicated to tape. In your
case anything that returned "no entity found" would be a problem.
Do you have checkpoints enabled? If you cancel a backup with checkpoints
enabled I don't think it "cleans up" the DSU fragments because in theory you
could restart the job.

Yes, i understand that the images can be deleted. But what if there are vaild
images that are registered in the catalog together with those backup failed
images, how am i going to tell which images to delete??
