Well the "recommended" advice, was to go for the latest MP for 5.x

As 6 is the latest, its obviously the recommended action to go by.

But again, MUST stress that I am only going on a conversation I have had -
cannot confirm in writing yet!

But initially, I was told I had to go from 5.x to 6.0 and then upgrade to
6.5 which I thought was pants :-(

That is a good question.  BTW I'd suggest to upgrade to 5.1MP6 before 
goign to 6.5, at least this is best practice.
