[Veritas-bu] Slow mailbox backups

i would disagree...  depending on what you use for vmware (hw, disk layout, 
mem, cpu , etc..), you could notice nothing or see horrid perf in a vm.   i 
rarely saw more than 2mb/sec doing brick level backups and we had san attached 
storage for mdb's, sep mirror for logs, sep mirror for os, gig eth, etc...  
brick level as the orig poster noted is slow at any rate, saying you use it 
from a vm, MAY add to the slowness, perhaps not.  it does seem like a decent 
approach to eliminate it as a possible issue.

Guys

There is ABSOLUTELY 
nothing wrong with that! In fact I run a dedicated GSX Server that hosts TONS 
of 
win2k3 VM's and even clusters. So that is not going to be the problem. And all 
our backups are absolutely fine. anyhow.... thats another subject 
:-)

 

Root point to start 
with is the end client, and my first thoughts are:

 

disable tracker.exe 
if it is running (Start / RUN / MSCONFIG and look for tracker.exe - if its 
ticked turn it off).

disable any 3rd 
party AV software

If the client is 
configured for VSS, turn that off as a temporary measure

Network settings on 
the client

 

Is the client on the 
same VLAN as the NetBackup Server? Any timeouts? Have you enabled any 
logging?

  We have an exchange client that 
  for some reason is backing up it mailboxes very slow. We know that mailboxes 
  is by nature slow, but this servers is REALLY slow. Under 1 MB per stream. 
  Because it is a virtual machine, it is backed up as a client. (Should have 
  been a media server due to its size, but being virtual server, it is not 
  possible.) All necessary configuration files have been created 
  (NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS and SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS etc.)

   

  Other exhange servers and their 
  mailboxes in the domain, running fine. Any ideas?
