So the only thing I never understood from your original post was *what*
information was sufficient or necessary to put on the tapes.

You could put client names on them, but in many situations you'll have
multiple clients on a volume.  How many can you list?  3?  10?  

You could put a volume pool on the tape, but I don't know if that gives
you the granularity you want. 

Datestamps may or may not be useful if you need to find the "latest"
copy.

There's lots of commandline tools to find and generate all that
information for each tape.

My other comments about the catalog were just an aside because I haven't
understood what information you had as a target.
