I have told them to use Activity Monitor and if a tape is needed, verify
with the "Media" gui if it is in the robot. If not, find the tape it wants
and chuck it in :-)

If you want to work out which tapes are required for a restore either:

-- through the admin GUi in the Backup, Archive & Recovery pane select the
files to be restored as usual and before clicking on the "Restore" button
and it tells you which tapes you need
-- if you prefer the command line then you can use "bpimagelist -media -U
-client clientname -hoursago NN" if its the most recent backup or use the
"-e" and "-s" flags to specify start/end backup window

If you want to know what is on each tape then try "bpimmedia media_number"
that gives you a report of all the backup fragments and their associated
images on the tape. I wouldn't even think about writing which backup images
on the individual tapes - if you're worried about importing swathes of tapes
then it could be worth saving a copy of "bpimmedia -m mediaid_number"
whenever you remove a tape somewhere safe so you've got a redundant version
of what's on each tape... You can then go back through these reports to
which out which tapes an image spans.

Rgds,

Henry

In respect of knowing what client backup was on the monthly tape. For
example if SERVER1 was backed up with a 1 year retention it is classed as a
monthly backup. That tape is unloaded and placed into a safe / vault. If 5
months down the line they need to restore data for the client, they wanted
to quickly find out what tape was used for restoring any data for the
server1 backup.

Anyhow, I think the easiest method here is going to just rely on activity
monitor and if a tape is needed not in the Library, then they can just go
ahead and load it :-)

Hi all
Quick question - NBU 5.1 MP2 Win2k3 Server

One of our libraries has over 40 tapes taken out each and every month to be
stored in a safe.

Trouble is, it is a time consuming process to label each tape (not that I
mind too much!).

Anyhow, is there an EASY method or way to tell What data is on a tape via a
command line without the need to load the single tape into the library?

I could go through tapes one by one, but is there an easier method I am
overlooking?
Thank you
