Dave,

In response to your question: Question is I suppose, is there likely to
be a problem with two volume managers using the same disks i.e. HDS
shadow copy and Vrts VM mirroring the same LUNS ???

It's do-able this way, but you'll probably run into some troubles with
the storage on the new-master. One is that the Veritas disk group will
be missing 50% of the LUNs it's supposed to have (remember Shadow copy
makes an exact duplicate of the LUNs including all vx private region
data). Also you may run into problems using Veritas to mirror from one
disk group to another on the new-master (I think VxVM requires a special
license to mirror across disk groups). In the end, you should be able
to get it to work, but you should plan it out ahead of time. And if you
haven't done something similar before, then it would be wise to do a
trial run first - basically do the entire migration, just don't start
netbackup on the new system.

That being said, it sounds like you might be making this more complex
than it needs to be...

>From what you stated it sounds like you have:

Current-master
/catalog - local disk, VxVM controlled

New-master
/catalog - local disk, VxVM controlled

No current SAN attached storage on either.

Since you mentioned that you'll be mirroring your "/catalog" volume onto
SAN storage to do the migration, then I would recommend *permanently*
moving "/catalog" onto SAN attached storage for both performance and
reliability...and to ease the migration. Once you create the mirror on
the SAN, remove the old mirror on local disk - that way you're left with
"/catalog" living on only on SAN storage.

Then present this same SAN storage to the new-master.

When you're ready to do the migration, umount and deport the disk group
from the current-master, and then import the disk group on the
new-master.

By doing this, you won't need to make as many copies of the data, since
you'll just be moving it from one host to the other. And you won't need
to use Shadow copy. Also - if at this point you decide that you really
don't want your "/catalog" storage to be on the SAN, you can always
initialize the local disk on the new-master, mirror the SAN storage to
it, and remove the SAN mirror.

Just my $.02
-Devon

Hi All

We are implementing a Master server migration with hostname change.

As our window for this work is tight, we are trying to think of the best
possible way to take a copy of /usr/openv/netbackup/db/images
to the new master server.

now on both master servers /usr/openv/netbackup/db/images is a link to
to locally attached disk /catalog

Both masters have a locally presented disk /catalog which is presented
by Veritas volume manager.
As we do not have the license to use veritas volume manager between
servers this it what I'm thinking :

present a new LUN from HDS to both master servers, use Veritas volume
manager on the on the old master server to create a third copy on new
LUN and then use HDS Shadow Image to mirror the two LUNS, on the new
master server replicate all data on the newly presented LUN to /catalog

Essentially on the day of migration I would merely have to split the HDS
shadow image mirror when duplexed and once happy that /catalog on the
new master has the correct data, remove the volume manager mirror

Question is I suppose, is there likely to be a problem with two volume
managers using the same disks i.e. HDS shadow copy and Vrts VM mirroring
the same LUNS ???

Much appreciated

Dave
