Bob
Does the event logs show a SAVEDUMP EVENT LOG or an event that shows the
Event Service was STOPPED and then a few moments later, Restarted.

If YES, then I would confirm that the Server HAS been rebooted, but what
caused it.... could be anything... from a Scheduled Task to a shutdown and
restart. Does Security Logs give any details as to who was logged on at the
time of the reboot?

My problem is that the media servers actually hang or reboot themselves

This is symantec supports suggestion so far:
As regards to the case and the servers rebooting, my assumption here is that
you have a 3rd party Windows program that is rebooting the server when there
is a service stopped or TCP connect failure. Check ALL the services on the
Windows servers and make sure that NONE have the Recovery tab setting for
"Restart the computer"

Bob,

I had the syndrome of device manager doing down on my W2K3 media servers
when I took the master down or rebooted the master and it "went away" when I
updated to MP5. I see you are at MP4.

Regards.

Thats ALOT of SAN/ MEDIA Servers!! 70 !

I see it on 2 SAN Media Servers, but only when the NetBackup MASTER server
Services are down or if the Server is restarted.

Once it comes back up, its fine!

NB 5.1 MP4

SSO with only master server as scan host

SL8500 firmware 3.02b

SL Console firmware 2.29.00

ACSLS 7.1.0

STK 9940B tape drives 1.35.409

tape device driver is Veritas 5.1.1.1
(NetBackupTapeDeviceDriverInstall20060215_282214.exe)

RSM is DISABLED on the window servers

We have had some problems with W2003 servers rebooting when the NetBackup
master server is shutdown and tape drives are taken offline.

Event log entry before reboot:

Cannot register shared drives for host mediaserver7 on host master1: cannot
connect to vmd

Is this due to the master server being the only scan host?

We placed the entry SSO_SCAN_ABILITY = 0 in all media server vm.conf files
except the master server.

BTW: we have 70 media/SAN media servers!
