This can also happen if the client does not have the correct permissions
on the server if it is not starting as the system account. I had this
once and that was the cause.

ok well if the others are ok, then its the client - could also try
uninstalling and reinstalling all the client software again.

if BKBkar is enabled, that should assist with the issue - ensure its set
for max logging too.

also check that the VSS service is not disabled - compare the services
to that of a working client perhaps.

check properties of the client against another client as well.

Both the master and the client are running 6.0 MP3. I have few
other servers working ok in the same policy. I have tried "All local
drives" directive and a test policy with just the "shadow copy
components" without success. NBU has been working great with R2 except
for one client. Bpbkar logs are pointing to VSS not be accessible and I
don't see VSS writers when I run vssadmin command. Seems like an OS
issue.

        Hi

Do you have another Windows 2003 Server to test? If so, does
that work ok in the same policy?

2003 R2 is a seperate release to Win2k3, but would expect NBU to
see it as a normal server.

        http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/272538.htm goes into a
little bit more details (most of which I have covered).

Is it possible to perform a test backup using just the ALL LOCAL
DRIVES for this Server?

Also, when I spoke about client software, what I am saying is
"ensure your client software is at the same version level and
maintenance pack level as your master"

So if you run NBU 5.1 and the master runs MP2, ensure the client
runs version 5.1 and MP2 as well

        Hope this helps

All the clients are Windows 2003 R2 and SP1 installed. I
tried creating a new test policy and the client is still throwing 71 on
Shadow Copy Components. Is there a separate patch for VSS that is not
included in SP1?

Are the clients in this policy definetely Windows 2003?

You cannot backup Windows NT 4 / Windows 2000 clients
with shadow copy as this will of course fail.

If they ARE Windows 2003, then ensure the client
software is correct version running to handle shadow copy backups
(including maintenance packs).

Finally, as a TEST, create a new TEST Policy for the
client(s) and try again :-)

                Greetings

2003 Shadow Copy Components

Hi! I'm getting status code 71 on Windows 2003
shadow copy components full backup. Any ideas on this?

This Win NT policy backs up the OS and data
partitions without any issues but throws a status code 71 for shadow
copy components. Any help would be appreciated.

                        Thanks,

                        Simrat
