Hi Greg,

I don't have deliberate experience in this area, but having migrated
between several formats I think I can safely say you will not run into
problems provided:

1) Barcode rules are set to recognize tape types of newly added media
2) Your devices are also configured as the correct matching tape type.
3) The storage unit in use is also using the matching tape type.

Media type value is merely a logical assignment to prevent this issue.
Netbackup uses these types to differentiate between tape types in this
situation and ensure that even if the volume pool (which doesn't have a
media type) is the same, the correct tape type is selected for the
appropriate drive.

There is nothing stopping you from designating an HCART (LTO) as a DLT
for instance, other than the fact this would cause problems when you try
to run backups and its unable to load the tape in the incorrect drive
type. You can even designate LTO3 media as HCART, rather than HCART3
provided your drives are also configured in this manner. I mention this
to demonstrate that this is only a logical assignment/relationship
created by the system administrator.

As long as there is enough unassigned or available media for each media
type in the pool, the policy is set to use the correct storage units and
your devices are properly assigned media types, Netbackup will load
tapes successfully in the correct drive. Otherwise, you will receive
SC96s or even worse: a confused L700 needing a reset, SC134, SC219s and
a bit of a headache :)

Please let me know if you have success with this configuration. As I've
said, I've never actually done this in production, but it is my
understanding Netbackup was designed to accommodate this type of
requirement.

Cheers,
-karl

We have installed some new LTO3 drives in our L700 that has some older
SDLT drives. We are phasing out the older drives. The robot will have
mixed media, meaning it will have LTO3 and SDLT tapes in the same robot.
Will netbackup know to not take a LTO tape and try to insert this into a
SDLT drive?

Also we have a tape pool called "scratchpool" where all tapes (and new
tapes) go when they scratch. So in this robot we have SDLT and LTO tapes
belonging to the same "scratchpool". Will this be an issue having both
tape types in the same pool? Will netbackup get confused and try to
mount the wrong tape in the wrong drive type?

We have the tapes et correctly and bar code rules and such.
