Running Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 3 (Taroon).

$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 test-backups-1001.subdomain.mydomain.com             
localhost.localdomain localhost

I have also tried this:
$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1   localhost.localdomain localhost
10.20.34.12  test-backups-1001.subdomain.mydomain.com

In each case, both fail.

Did you get this error yourself?
