I would not put too much in the change of the library name from L to SL.

On the new SL8500 the mean time from cell to drive is 5 sec. on the L-180,
L-700 and L-1400 it is 4 sec.

I would say that the SL500 is an updated version of the L80, and the name SL
was taken to signal the "new line of libraries" with the SL8500.

I know from some of the people that sell and service the SL8500 that the
main difference is cost compared to the old library it replaces, not
performance. You get more tapes and drives into a fully configured SL8500.
The old solution supported a max of 144.000 slots and the SL8500 can have
300.000 slots.

And the library doesn't have any impact on the performance the same second
the tape is in the drive.

And on the L-180, L700e and L1400 you have a lot more drive options.

I haven't checked the used market prices for the L700e lately, but 2 years
ago you could get a fully configured L700e without drives at around USD
20.000 and a L180 at around USD 17-18.000.

I mostly use STK9940B drives in our installation, and that drive isn't an
option in the SL500.

/johnny

Personally I would spend my money on a used STK L180 or STK L700e. They are
by far better then the STK SL500 (Sun L500). At least that is the way I
think.

As far as I know, the SL means Stream Line, which a better performance from
the L series.
But if you want to know the spesification for more detail, why dont you go
to storagetek.com?
and maybe you can ask for the product from their support service..
