I'm trying to consider organizations that might have a high turn over
where no one really knows where the data may have been before it might
have moved onto it's current box. =20

=20

Other than using Excel which seems a very obvious and manual process, I
was hoping someone might have had some other ideas. Especially any
automated processes. I know that some people have mentioned entries in
/etc/fstab and the like but I'm looking for a strategy that's more
centralized to the NBU master server itself.

=20

I realize this just might be a great wish list thing, something that
comes along with data life cycle management.

Regards,

                   Brian

Hi

Well my gut feeling is, the Admin would "ask" a question - I was in fact
in this position - had to restore data from a server no longer existed,
but found that the server was replaced by a new box, with a new name.

=20

With the BA&R tool, simply added the new server as the destination and
the data was restored.

=20

Is this the sort of scenario you meant? Server changes were documented
using excel sheet, although its not quite a common issue now as it was 8
months ago!

I didn't see any responses to this. I would also be very
curious to know how people are tracking this kind of information.

        =20

        Hello all,

        =20

I was curious how people are tracking moves of filesystems. =20

        =20

For example, let's say /export/home resides on serverA, then
serverA is decommissioned and replaced by serverB.

        =20

Two years later, the new administrator assigned to backups has
to restore a file from /export/home, but isn't aware that it used to
reside on serverA and therefore doesn't see any backups listed because
he/she entered serverB as the client.

        =20

So, the question is how are people tracking the moves....Excel
spreadsheets?

        =20

        Any info is appreciated.
