Deiter,

You need to have:

How much data per client
What is your retention policy,
What schedules - cum-incremental/ incremental (% of total data changed = I
used 20% as a rule of thumb) and full
Frequency of each schedule...
Number of copies for each backup.

I treated each client as individual - so each client was allocated media
according to it's size - I used to allocate min 1 tape per day per client
if they wanted off-site too. You could become too technical and "group"
all the incrementals together onto 1 tape, but then you do get broken
media...and if u allocate exactly you won;t have any spares.

Also - at around $50 per tape - not too expensive....considering the risk
of no recovery at all...

I used to have this in a Excel spreadsheet.

Good luck,

\_JdS_/

Solaris 9 master/media server at 5.1 mp4
6 solaris clients
20 some windows clients
storagetek robot using SDLT's

We have been asked to determine the amount of tapes needed to complete all
our current backup schedules till the end of this year.
I wondered if any one else has accomplished this and would have any hints
or tricks.
