a storage unit should be a logical grouping of target devices for
backups.
=20
media servers cannot share storage units, so each media server must have
at least one STU.
=20
if policies are configured on a particular media server, then clients in
that policy will back up to that media server's storage unit.
=20
one example of using storage units is to allocate tape drives.
=20
for instance, if you have 12 tape drives and only want your develepment
clients to occupy at most 4, but your prod policies to use as many as
are available, then you can create a storage unit A with 4 drives, and
another B with 8 drives.....you can set the dev policies to use stu A,
and prod policies to use "any available"
=20
that's one example that comes to mind.
=20
another is one per robot.....then if you want to use drives from any
available robot, you can put the STUs in a storage unit group, and point
policies to the group, etc.
=20
one STU per policy seems inefficient.
a high priority DB having it's own media server may not be so
odd....though it could be a SAN media server, which is cheaper, license
wise....but either way would require it's own STU.

Can someone please give me an idea of what storage units are
used for? I mean, I know I've got one per media server and another for
disk based storage, but I've recently taken over a remote site who uses
a storage unit to "customize" their database backups by "reserving" a
certain media server for this one backup policy that uses this one
Storage Unit. I've found yet another site who is using one storage unit
per policy?! I'm in no way a "guru" but most of this seems off kilter.
Can someone give me a real world example of the proper implementation of
Storage Units?! Alternately, a link to an overview would be helpful.
        =20
        As always, thank you!
