greetings...

1. you can restore into another mailbox.  you must
specifiy this in the alternate path.  
2. exchange must be running for a brick level
(mailbox) restore.

we used to do brick level backup/restore with
netbackup and stopped as our exchange db's kept
getting larger and the backup was already at 6 hours
with only 20gb db.  we now have well over 100gb (and
we set 100mb mailbox limits with a few exceptions). 
we bought qwest recovery manager for exchange.  this
allows for restore of mailboxes, public folders
directly.  they can be restored to the original
location, psts, or other mailboxes.  mailbox restores
take a bit longer using qwest however we dont have to
restore to production directly if not needed as well
as no longer needing to do brick level backups.
