I went to a Microsoft TechNet Briefing some 6 months ago and they talked
extensively about this. Basically, its an easy way to do disk to disk
backups of windows environments, assuming you have the capital to spend
on an extra server and a load of disks. I looked up my notes and found
this:
=20
Benefits -=20
Integration with windows / uses VSS
"Snapshot" Restores available of every time a data file gets saved
(configurable / limited by disk space)
End User Restores through Explorer
=20
Disadvantages
Cannot Backup UNIX / Linux
Poor tape management / still need Backup Exec etc
Number of servers that can be protected is limited by amount of disk
space AND network backbone available.
=20
Basically, this is VSS on a windows machine then replicated to a
dedicated server. That way if anything gets mucked up, (assuming its
not the DPM machine) you can restore over the wire. Pretty handy in
small network (branch locations, small business) but the larger your
environment grows the more management and hardware this solution
requires. At the time the solution was also SEVERELY limited with
regards to synthetic backups and reporting, which was to be "fixed" in
R2. I'm not sure if this is it or not.
=20
We test deployed to a few clients, but in the end stuck with Backup Exec
for these types of small environments. Especially when there was a
Novell or Unix system in the mix. Then again, at the time this solution
was free (at least to us, we are Microsoft Gold Partners) so if a client
wasn't willing to plunk down $1200 for Backup Exec this would do.
=20
Hope that helps, I've got a few Power Points if anyone wants them.
