I took out the gui bitmaps because the email was too large. Hopefully
reading will help.
=20
Good luck!

A few things of note. I do not know you level of expertise so I am going
to assume you know little for the sake of the explanation. I am much
stronger in Solaris than I am with HP-UX. However, I believe they define
their device paths in a similar manner. What most SVR4-type UNIX
implementations do is use /dev as links to the /devices directory. If
you will notice a listing of /dev/rdsk on a Solaris 8 server:
=20
<server_name>:/dev/rdsk -> ls -l | head
total 32
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root          47 Dec  8  2004 c0t0d0s0 ->
../../devices/pci@1c,600000/scsi@2/sd@0,0:a,raw

Over and above that NBU is excellent in restoring your links. If you do
a restoral of /dev/rdsk you should see your links. That is all that you
will restore. I have a bitmap of the java gui to show you that you can
get to the /dev/rdsk/ raw partitions via the gui, but is it what you
really want? No. You want the actual device.
Follow the links. You will want the files that start out "crw-..." They
are the character or raw disk devices.

If you manage your disk using Veritas Volume Manager you will go to a
little different path. The path you see here is unique to our situation.
If you are using HP LVM the path is different, but I cannot recall what
it is off the top of my head. What these device files represent in this
particular case are raw Oracle slices/volumes. This is what you pick up
and drop on the servers.

Here is an example from the gui to help you a bit.

You may want to double check with vendors, but this should help you. I
have had to restores some raw Veritas volumes in the past. Most DBAs are
going to cooked file systems and the need to go to raw volumes is going
by the wayside (at least here).
