My old shop used to backup a 20TB Oracle RAC database using RMAN only. It
took almost 24 hours to do a full but we only did this weekly. Daily
backups were incrementals via RMAN and they were never a significant
problem. It's not entirely problem free, Oracle can spend a lot of time
determining what needs to be backed up for its incremental. The database
servers were media servers, of course.

Another option is to do RMAN fulls of certain table spaces with nightly
incrementals of the other remaining tablespaces. Each night do a full
backup of a different set of tablespaces. This would allow you to roll a
full backup of the entire database across the week rather than pounding the
heck out of it once a week. We talked about this but never implemented due
to its complexity and the fact that our weekends were nearly empty of DB
traffic. It's great on paper, though.

"stair stepping" was never discussed but I don't think the primary DBA's on
this database would've dug that that level, either.

Split mirrors were discussed briefly but were canned due to expense (how
many times do you want to buy 20TB?).

I haven't done it but my coworker here has indicated several times that RMAN
isn't good for hot backup of large DBs because it does "stair stepping" of
the tables and takes forever to backup due to this. Perhaps others on the
list have more details of this behavior.

We do use RMAN for some smaller repositories and all the scripts are done on
the RMAN side (in fact the backup is initiated by scripts on the server
rather than Netbackup).

Backup Gurus:
We have a large oracle rman db which is currently over 500 gb. In the
very near future this db is going to grow to 1 TB. We have just finished
testing & began implementing BLIB on this and other large db backups.

Are any of you able to backup large db's like this to numerous tapes at the
same time. Is this all being setup from the RMAN side of things? Any
ideas, suggestions or things to watch out for would greatly be appreciated.
