True. The original question implies that there is time and available
drives as duplication is happening now. Most likely duplication is not
occurring for "all your backups" but an important subset.

Luckily I'm not in charge of the vault option here, but if you own it,
it would seem wise to use it. The "wrapper" provides more than just
bpduplicating images.

Well, technically you can do this with bpduplicate & the altreadhost
option.
No vault package is needed. However, if you're using bpduplicate or
vault (which is just a wrapper around bpduplicate), then you're taking
the time to duplicate all your backups for consolidation. OK if you've
got the time & available drives.

What you need is the "Vault" option.

This will allow you to consolidate images from media owned by various
media servers to maximize tape utilization for tapes going offsite. It
specifically allows a read media server to take images from other media
servers and put them on a tape or set of tapes.

If you own Vault, reference the Admin guide. If you don't I'm not sure
how much the option costs.

I have several volume pools set up for different retention dates. I
have 4 media servers - Solaris, 2 WIN2003, and 1 Linux. I have scripts
that use bpduplicate to copy images to certain volume pools, to go
offsite. I just realized that the media servers don't share tapes. OK,
I'm a little slow.

It's not a problem except for the Linux media server, is behind a
firewall, and isn't backing up much data. Everyday a tape goes offsite
with very little data. I didn't calculate for that in my quote to the
Business Unit. They are going to be very upset.

My question is, can I configure multiple media servers to write to the
same tape, not concurrently of course? I'd really like to get some more
data on those tapes before sending them offsite.

Thanks for any suggestions.
