DOCUMENTATION: How to migrate the NetBackup catalog information from one
platform to another, such as UNIX NetBackup server to Windows or
vice-versa.
To insure data integrity and seamless operation, this operation must be
performed by Symantec Consulting Services. The NetBackup Consultants have
developed a comprehensive methodology to handle a variety of
reconfiguration scenarios, and can assist in navigating through the
complexities of the procedure. Please contact a NetBackup Sales
representative for assistance in engaging Symantec Consulting. Please
note, a migration of this sort must be a part of a conscious, planned, and
permanent transition, and should not be part of a disaster recovery
process or any part of a disaster recovery plan.
Below the unofficial netbackup documentation
**** PHASE 1: Preparing the catalog ****
1. Deactivated all policies and waited for the active jobs to finish.
2. In my case there were used Inline Tape Copy to leave all backup images
a
primary copy (copy1) on local disk. These disk images had to be expired
for
the catalog to address the tape copies (copy2) as the "primary" copies
3. Initiated Catalog backup twice to ensure that I had two separate
copies
4. Logically moved all tape media in the robot to "off-site" location.
5. Decompressed the catalog
6. Cleaned up the catalog (removed expired images etc.):
7. Stopped all Netbackup deamons.
8. convert the database from binary to ascii
9. Installed the new server with Windows by using a temporary server
name/ip-address.
10.FTP
11. Downed and turned off the UNIX server (unplug network cable to avoid
possible conflicts with the new server).
12. Changed the server name and ip-address of the Windows server to the
same
as on the (dead) UNIX server.
13. Installed NetBackup 5.1 and all relevant option keys according to
normal
installation procedures.
14. Stopped all Netbackup services.
15. Copied: database
16. Moved all files from the temporary directory
17.convert database from binary to ascii
18. Deleted the catalog entry for the master server
19. Restarted the NetBackup services..
20. Controlled the integrity of the catalog, media-listings, volume
manager,
restore browsing etc.
21. opened bp.conf in notepad and manually pasted the configuration
options
thru the Master Server Host Properties dialog
22. Configured the robot and tape devices, and performed a Robot
Inventory
to update the media database.
24. Tested restore of "old" data on several servers, wich was found OK.
Additional "things" you will have to fix manually: master server backup
policy, master server file exclusions, Catalog Backup config,
buffer-tuning,
touch-files etc. Remember to copy your scripts if any...
I take no responsibility for the outcome of the above procedure.
Environmental issues not covered in this description may require
additional
steps!
Best Regards
Harun Jonatan
