By the way the 900KB/s was only with FlashBackup on a filesystem with
millions of files.

Our regular clients max out at 12MB/s with directly attached or gigabit
at 30-55MB/s.

You'll get those messages on pretty much any backup, as it has to find
the next blank space on the tape to start writing....though I believe it
occurs more on MPX backup, and more again with smaller fragment size.

=20

My understanding is that a bigger fragment size will speed up backups,
because NBU doesn't have to write the fragment info as often, but will
hit you on restores, as once Netbackup has found the correct fragment to
restore from, it has to search through the entire fragment to find the
specific data, so the bigger the fragment, the more data it has to
search through to find the file you want.

=20

However, if you're really getting throughput of 900KB/s, and on a
flashbackup besides, as you said the other day, then I think you've got
some more serious problems to troubleshoot before you need to get into
tuning fragment size.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Question Regarding Positioning Under
NetBackup 5.1MP3a.

Often when I back any machine up I see the following:

        =20

        08/12/2005 08:03:00 - positioning L12345 to file 116

        08/12/2005 08:03:00 - positioning L12345 to file 118

        08/12/2005 08:03:00 - positioning L12345 to file 119

        =20

Does this have to do with the fact I am using multiplexing or
does it have to do with the fragment size being set to 2048MB?

        =20

Would one get better performance if the fragment size was set to
a different number?

        =20

How would it affect backups? (time-wise)

How would it affect restores? (time-wise)

        =20

        Thanks,

        =20

        Justin.
