I'm seeming 30-40 for sure....but I'm not concerned with throughput....
=20
I want to know the number of drives considered minimum to provide
resiliency, in the case of failed drives.
=20
Ok, sample environment.
several 100mb/s win clients retention 2 weeks mpx=3D8
several GigE win clients, retention 2 weeks.mpx=3D2
exchange server GigE, retention 2 weeks, mpx-2, different volume pool
than above.
several 100mb/s unix clients retention 7 weeks mpx=3D2
several unix DB servers with SHORT backup windows, retention 7 weeks
mpx=3D2
=20
So 3 LTO drives are sufficient to backup your entire environment in a
timely manner.
One Windows client with GigE with a 2 week retention starts at 7pm, and
due to a problem with VSP snapshot, the job hangs and is still running
at 8am.
That's one drive gone....remainder of 100mb/s clients with 2 week
retention can hit that drive, one at a time, and gigE clients can
continue to backup, one at a time, since a mp2 job is hung on that
drive....limiting number of jobs on that drive to 2.
a tape messes up in a drive, and a drive goes down.....that's two drives
gone.
=20
one drive left to backup your environment....a job with 2 week retention
is writing to that drive, and additional jobs will multiplex to it
untill all 2 week retention jobs are done.
=20
exchange and all the 7 week retention jobs are queued waiting for all
Windows 2 week jobs to finish.........by the time the 2 week jobs are
done, it's 5am, and the backup window is closed......
=20
result 100+ status 196 jobs.
=20
Question: is three tape drives sufficient in this or any environment???

Using 8-stream multiplexing I see around 35-55MB/s per drive on
a single LTO2 drive.

=20
Just as a quick survey,.....based on number of clients,
regardless of drive type, speed, etc,
=20
What would any of you consider a MINIMUM number of tape drives
for an environment with ~100 network based clients and 2 TB of data??
200 clients and 4 TB? 400 clients and 8 TB?
=20
I'm not looking for minimum number of drive to backup x
terabytes of data, in y hours, as that is more just math, and how fast a
drive will stream data, assuming your clients can push it fast enough.
=20
I'm looking more for what you would feel comfortable with,
knowing that a job(s) can hang due to Windows Open File Backup tanking,
or a tape getting stuck in a drive, or a large job failing at the last
minute and having to be restarted, or a SCSI error downing a drive, etc,
etc.
