I would suggest spending the small amount it would cost for the barcode 
reader.... Long term, you'll be MUCH happier.

In the short term, use the vmphyinv command.  This essentially stands 
for "Volume Manager PHYsical INVentory".  NetBackup will mount each 
tape in the library (or range of slots based on command usage) and try 
to determine what's where in the library.  The down side is that I 
don't think NBU will ADD new/unlabeled media.  So the first time 
around, you'll need to manually tell NetBackup what tapes are in each 
slot, then use bplabel to get a media id written to each cartridge.
