Instead of expiring the primary copies, why not just
promote the secondary copies to primary using the
bpchangeprimary command in 5.x. The bpchangeprimary is
more flexible and you can find documentation for its'
use in the Commands manual for 5.x.

If you are running 4.5, the command is bpduplicate
-npc 2 -backupid

Where 2 is the secondary copy (you could promote the
3rd or 4th copy if there was one) and where backupid
is the backupid of the image which you can use the
Images on media report to find if you dont know it.
