I used to handle this by setting the window for the calling schedule to
smaller than my retry interval.  Once the script is called, the window can
close & the RMAN script continues to run.  Just make sure your data
schedules are wide open.

Ok. I have been requested by one of our DBA folks to not retry a backup for
a DB where the backup has failed the first time through. The retry setting
is global so I cannot turn it off that way. Does anyone have any ideas on
how I can have Netback not to retry a failed backup?
