Actually, what you are seeing is a consequence of the
fact that NetBackup reports backup and restore
information quite differently. The amount backed up
that you see for the job is reported by the bptm
process which only indicates the data written to the
tape. Let me explain briefly what happens. The bpbkar
process on the client sends its' data to the bptm
process on the media server during the backup. Then
when all the files have been backed up, the file
metadata information is sent back to the master to the
bpdbm process. The bpdbm process also gets information
from the bptm process through the bpsched process. So
bpdbm is aware of the actual total byte count (as far
as it is concerned) which is equal to the bptm
(written to tape) and the file metadata (which wasn't
written to tape) as well as the NetBackup
communication traffic between the servers through the
bpsched process which is not inconsiderable. These
items all contribute to the backup and restore sizes
being reported differently. The restore information is
pulled from the bpdbm which shows all the "extra"
information.
