How to reuse or recycle unnecessary VERITAS NetBackup database catalog tapes
for normal backups
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/237779.htm
<http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/237779.htm>

Details:

In order to reuse tapes that were previously used for NetBackup database
catalog backups, perform the following two steps:

Caution: Once these steps have been performed, the original data on the tape
is destroyed and lost - make certain beforehand that verification has been
done on all the tapes on which this operation is to be performed, and that
they are indeed tapes that can be overwritten!

Perform the following commands on the volume database host (usually the
NetBackup master server):

Step 1. Determine which tapes are catalog backup tapes on your system by
issuing the following command:

/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/vmquery -a > /tmp/vmquery.out

After the re-directed output file is created - vi (or use editor of choice)
the file and search for the status 0x1 (see output below) - this status
indicates that it is a catalog backup tape and record the media ID as a
catalog backup tape.

After identifying all of the catalog backup tapes, the active catalog backup
tapes should be identified (this can be done using the Java GUI, Configure
drop down menu, and selecting NetBackup Catalog Backup, viewing the
selections for media 1 and media 2 and noting the media IDs. This can also
be accomplished by viewing the last mounted category for the status 0x1
tapes from the output below, in the event that only catalog backup tapes
older that a certain date are to be reused (a working strategy can be
developed to only reuse catalog database tapes older that 1 month, etc.).

Caution: These active catalog backup media IDs must NOT be overwritten or
destroyed. Take special care to avoid the following procedure on the active
catalog backup media and any other catalog backup media that you wish to
keep.

The example of the vmquery -a output below shows two different types of
NetBackup tapes. The status 0x0 is a NetBackup backup tape and the status
0x1 indicates a tape that has been used for a NetBackup catalog database
backup.

Step 2. /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/vmquery -deassignbyid <media_id> <pool_number>
<status>

i.e. /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/vmquery -deassignbyid 000101

(where 000101 is the tape volume ID)

Step 3. /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bplabel -ev evsn -d density [-o]
[-p volume_pool_name] [-n drive_name | -u device_number]

i.e. /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bplabel -ev 000101 -d dlt (in this
case 000101 is the tape volume ID, dlt is the tape density, and assumes that
a robotic library exists and the tape is in the library. If it is a
standalone tape drive system, a drive name will have to be specified in the
command line).

Note: If this is a standalone tape system, the tape must already be in the
drive specified above - this may take manual intervention.

These steps will remove the information from the volume database and write a
new label to the tape, effectively erasing any previous information on the
tape, which can now be used for NetBackup backups.

What about tapes that have previously been used for catalog backups? How do
you tell netbackup to recycle the tape regardless of what it was previously
used for. We're currently running Netbackup 4.5. I have a whole slew of
tapes that keep freezing - some of which do not show up as a catalog backup
tape. Perhaps the tapes are just bad?

Thanks,
Tina

Somebody please remind me how to fix this - I am recycling some old tapes
which have unknown data on them and NBU tells me that it is FREEZING the
media because it contains ANSI-format data and cannot be used for backups.
I want to put these volumes in a scratch pool and allow NBU to assign and
use them as necessary. These tape volumes are in a tape library with a
barcode reader.
