I ran in to this issue after upgrading windows 2000 Master server to 2000
Server Service Pack 6, this some how changed the device drivers for the
drives,

With the wrong drivers we were constantly getting Media write and read
errors, along with Frozen tapes - I was over cleaning drives and having a

Hard time just getting backups to complete even with ten attempts - Until -

After installing the correct Veritas Drivers from the Veritas Install CD,
under additional products, additional products installation, Netbackup tape
device drivers -

It seemed to help out. Believe it or not Veritas support never mentioned
that when I was constantly getting media write errors or read errors and
frozen tapes.

Installing the drivers is simple, just follow the options then reboot the
server. This can help with all kinds of errors.

Also Very important - The Firmware on the drives is very important, it
should be on the Veritas HCL for those drives. Once the correct firmware is
installed

You would be amazed at the improvement from tape read and write errors and
cleaning messages that used to appear and after upgrading the firmware helps

Get rid of these messages, Also, you should really be careful about over
cleaning the drives, it harms the heads, specially if the errors are just
Driver and Firmware

Related.

Once you have the correct drivers installed, this should clear up a lot of
the error messages, But the critical issue is having the correct firmware
on the drives,

That can be seen from using the DLTSAGE from Quantum.

http://support.veritas.com/dsl/lists/nbu_device_ddProduct_NETBACKUPDC_prod1_
NBUDC45_vendor_STK.htm

Use this to find out the firmware tested - and the DLTsage or STK support to
ensure that the correct Firmware is loaded on the drives. -

The correct firmware for drives causes backups to run smooth and free of
unnecessary errors - that result in over cleaning drives.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Media Write Errors, Exit Status 84

I'd like to get some feed back as to everyone's experience concerning Media
write errors. I have 4 sites that are almost identical, Compaq servers,
Compaq HBA's, STK L700's and SDLT320 drives. The only difference between
these sites would be number of processors in the server, amount of memory in
the server and the number of SDLT drives. One site in particular has racked
up over 182 frozen tapes since I implemented the backup solution which is
only 22 months old.

First question, does 182 frozen media in only 22 months seem to be a high
rate? Media is always brand new and either Fuji or Quantum.

STK has been working with us to try to resolve this issue and actually gave
us 120 brand new tapes last week. We pulled out all of our existing tapes
and loaded up the 120 new ones. Over the weekend we had 3 CRC's media write
errors. The percentage seems kind of high.

I'm running NetBackup 4.5 at the MP6 level.

Is this a normal level for CRC's with SDLT?

Is it the technology?

Anyone else out there having similar issues?

We are actually at the point of considering changing technology to LTO
drives and media. We have another small site due for replacement and so far
that seems to be the road we are taking because of the SDLT CRC issue.
