Hi,

We run Veritas with CA-TNG in an environment where there is a
masterserver and 9 mediaservers, connected to a STK robot with 20
drives. We have about 50 clients on the masterserver. We duplicate this
to another site.

Question : What do other people do wrt automation of backup jobs,
restores - the scheduler kicks of jobs, but, around monitoring and
escalation if a backup overrun, mediaserver process dies, masterserver
looses network connection, etc. How do other people monitor the Veritas
environment via the automated monitoring agent, in our case CA TNG..

Any automation input welcome to assist with monitoring, escalations etc.

Thanx

Winnie

Hi

System is a windows 2000 environment with 4.5 DC

1 backup server and 18 clients backing up over Gigabit LAN to library
attached to backup server

2 clients ( windows domain controllers) when backing up C:\ & system
state
the jobs show begin writing and freeze there until cancelled.

When looking at task manager shows a few bpbkar32 processes, rebooted
resolves the issue but keeps coming back

Any ideas??

Kind Regards,

Imran Khan

Are your tape drives attached to a SAN with Fibre? or are the Direct
SCSI?

I have seen issues very similar to this;

1) If the devices are Fibre Attached make sure you are not using any
sort of
SAN Management Tool. Compaq has one, HP has one, Tivoli SAN Manager is a
nother. I think Q-Logic has one as well. These tools send a soft reset
on
the Fibre Channel every once and a while that interrupts the backup. The
job
tries to recover and before it can it gets hit again. I have had to use
a
Fibre Channel Analyser to catch this in some cases.

2) Ensure that the Windows Removable Storage Manager is disabled. With
Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows 2003 windows will send a scsi probe on the
SCSI/Fibre bus. This probe determines if a tape drive is loaded and it
attempts to read the label. This is very similar to the auto mount
feature
of a CDROM on a windows system. Windows 2003 actually requires a
registry
hack to disable this default behaviour, even with RSM disabled.

Both are very common for causing performance issues with a Windows
Server.
Job starts out properly and then gets slower, slower and slower...

Just my unreliable 2 cents

You need to use either straight NDMP or Remote NDMP. We use Remote NDMP
here, but I have no idea how that works or is configured yet, because
the
previous admins saw fit not to clue me in. (anyone want to help???)

Thanks!

You'll want to get an NDMP license and a locally attached SCSI backup
device for the Netapp (I think that's still are requirement but I could
be wrong). Check the version of Data OnTap for compatibility with DAR
(direct access restore). You don't need DAR, but without it the entire
backup image must be read for even a single file.

You'll also need to look at the NDMP Administrator's Guide. It will walk
~ you through setting up the NDMP devices and authentication.
