I believe after FP3 Veritas has support for having the
client on a newer version than the server.  I
specifically know this because I had a problem where I
needed to update my Windows clients to FP6, and I
called support to ask and they verified that running a
server at FP3 with a client at FP6 is supported. 
Anything below FP3 I believe doesn't not have this
version sharing capability.
