You can find the Veritas status codes if you download the tar source 
package from the support web site.  It has the include files with the 
status values.

That said status 40 is listed as a general error 'EC_connection_broken'; 
tar error codes are in the range 180-189.  So I'd guess it is not a 
problem with tar itself.  You don't give any indication what you are 
restoring from or to; that may be important.  There could be issues of the 
LOCALE of the media server and the client; there are instances where one 
or other may be unable to read the file names if there are unusual 
characters in them.

Otherwise I'd look at ordinary issues, like permissions to overwrite the 
mailbox with the restore.   You may find a different log has more 
information about what is happening at the file system level.
