Samuel-

The st.conf entry you describe above doesn't look like right to me,
particularly with relation to the 3rd field ("262144")

This setting is essentially telling the st driver to write in
fixed-block mode, i.e. to always write to the tape with a 256k
blocksize. This is a big no-no as per the Veritas documentation:

 From /usr/openv/volmgr/MediaMgr_DeviceConfig_Guide.txt on my master
server, immediately preceding a sample st.conf file:

   ------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Caution: Note the second portion of this list, where the third parameter
(variable mode) must be 0. Not using 0 causes restores to fail and may
result in data loss. (The entry for ARCHIVE_VIP is the only exception.)
..."
   ------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I were you I'd do some restore testing, and give serious
consideration to changing that "262144" to a "0".
