18 Streams from a single NFS mounted filesystem (they're crazy in love with
NFS around here) writing to a different single NFS mounted filesystem (disk
STU) on the same server (acting as its own media server).

Each filesystem, source & destination, is on a different filer but both are
accessed through the same gigabit ethernet connection.

And, Dan, multiplexing only applies to tape drives so I'm not doing it on
the disk STU.

18 streams FROM the server, but how many going TO each disk storage unit
(how many concurrent jobs is the Storage Unit configured to handle)... 18?

Writes to disk aren't multiplexed the same way writes to tape are. I
wouldn't expect 18 streams to disk to be faster than 18 streams to tape,
especially if it's a newer tape technology and most definitely if it's
parallel ATA your writing to.

18 simultaneous streams (client-side push using bpbackup with a filelist).
Using 10 streams took a bit longer so fewer streams does not increase
performance.

Are you using multi-streams in the backups to disk? That can cause the
disk to thrash and slow things down.

Any suggestions for increasing the performace of backups to a disk
storage
unit?

I've recently switched a backup from tape to disk and experienced a ~20%
increase in backup times. Any disk-specific tunables you're aware of?
