I have quite a bit of experience with the hcart vs hcart2 issue.

First off, are you intending to have both types of drives in the unit?

If so, then you have to have hcart for the old media and hcart2 for the
newer media. (this is to keep the gen1 drives from loading the gen2 media)

Unfortunately there is not a way to tell netbackup that a drive is
compatible with multiple media types. Our biggest issue is the juggling act
of having enough of each type of tape in the unit. We have a unit with 2
Gen1 drives and 2 Gen2 drives. I have to keep a close eye on how many of
each type are in the unit. I generally just use the vmchange command to
switch an existing tape from hcart to hcart2. (we just ran out of the gen2
media and I am still waiting on the order to come in).

If you are planning on only having Gen2 drives in the new unit then I don't
see any reason not to just use hcart. This of course supposes that you will
configure your policies to backup only to the new unit. If you are doing a
trade in and will have to give up the L700 right away this could be
problematic. You would need to suspend your gen1 media to keep your new
drives from trying to write to them if they are not full. Also as soon as
they fully expire they will be available for use by the g2 drives.

This multiple media type issue can be a sticky thing. It also has caused me
issues with vault. Two different media types cannot be put into the same
volume group so I have had to create 2 separate Vaults for the gen1 and gen2
media. I perform the duplications all under one vault profile but then I
had to create 2 vault eject profiles. One ejects the tapes under 00_000_TLD
and the other ejects the tapes under 01_000_TLD (these are both the same
robot)

Depending on the number of drives you need vs the number you will have
available you could create 1 or two of the drives as hcart and put the old
media in the unit. All of the other drives and new media would be hcart2.
This would provide you with a dedicated 1 or 2 drives for restoring from
those old tapes.

I think the biggest roadblock here is the fact you don't want to write
to....

Oh wait. What about just clicking on the write protect tabs for all of the
old tapes? The unit would try and load them but when it tried to write it
would spit them out and go for another. I forget how NBU handles write
protected tapes. Does it suspend them or freeze them?

As I was saying... the biggest roadblock here is the fact that you don't
want to write to the old tapes again. Unless you have the L700 sticking
around for awhile then you are going to be in a bind I think. Depending on
how restores are handled you might be able to create a work around of some
sort.

I really think it is going to come down to keeping hcart and just dealing
with the fact that if the g1 tapes expire and you don't get them out of the
unit right away they will be used unless you want to deal with creating new
volume pools. If you create new pools and have the backups use the new
pools then you can put both tapes in the unit as hcart and not have to worry
about writing to the g1 tapes. If you don't depend on media in the scratch
pool for then disable the scratch pool so netbackup won't put the g1 back
into the scratch pool. If you do use the scratch pool then we are back to
square one.

Well this has been about as useful as a glass hammer but maybe it will spur
some creative juices for you.

                Subject: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup questions.

I have a couples on NetBackup questions.
We are upgrading our tape library to STK SL8500 with HP LTO2
tape drives (we now have a STK L700 with LTO1 drives, my media & master
servers are W2K )
I am thinking of adding two Windows 2003 media server
(ep-wpp-bs01 & ep-wpp-bs02) to replace the W2K servers (BSMEDIA1 &
BSMEDIA2). Is there still a problem using Windows 2003 servers and will I
have any issues with a W2K Master?
Also what would be the best way to add the LTO2 media to
NetBackup during the migration form the old (HCART) library to the new?
Should I create a HCART2 Media type or keep the HCART since
the LTO1 media will work in the LTO2 drives but I only want to use the LTO2
for all new backups
I also have a Fiber Channel question.
We have two fabrics a 1gb (see SAN layout attached) and a
new 2GB fabric. Both libraries are attached to the 1GB fabric and we use
SSO & Vault between sights.
The new LTO2 drives have a 2GB interface, so should I move
all the backups to the 2GB fabric or just keep the LTO2 on the 1GB fabric.
(My guess would be to keep them on the 1GB since I don't think we would be
able to push that much information)
The data transfer peak performance doubles from up to
20MB/second native in LTO1 and up to 40MB/second in LTO2
