Actually, no I don't have a script for this. It's not that big an issue
that I worry about some sort-of-occupied tapes.

I don't usually worry about the "phantom data" issue (I like the term
"phantom data" by the way, Rusty.)

So Mark is correct...if there are failed jobs during a backup session
that space on tape is not reclaimed until the last image on the tape
expires and the entire tape is available for reuse.

I believe the main reason for this (and this is stretching way back to
my OpenVision days) was to not impact the overall backup window with
rewind/repositioning, but to complete the entire backup session as
quickly as possible. You do sacrifice some space on tape, but the end
result hopefully is that all backups complete within the given window.

As far as keeping track of the "failed" jobs...well I'm sure Mark has
some scripts for that as well as others. I wrote one a while back, but
I can't remember if it provides the info you need for tracking. I would
leverage bperror to identify the failed jobs...

How do you check for these jobs? Do you have a script, or just manually
keep track of all failed jobs and go from there?

As a side note, I've seen NBU use the same tape again after it has
failed. I think the key difference is that the tape did not fill up, so
it had space to write to even with the 'phantom' data from the failed
job.

Thanks,

Rusty
