Just for the education of the masses....

We have upgraded the drivers to the standard SUN sg drivers with some
fantastic help from Veritas. The first tech from Veritas that I spoke
with gave me the directions to upgrade, which were:

1. Reboot the system with a -r,
2. Rename the file /kernel/drv/sg.conf to sg.conf.old,
3. Run /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/driver/sg.install,
4. Run sgscan to see if the links got created,
5. Reconfigure the drives to use the new driver from the gui and restart
netbackup,
6. Start the gui and run the device configuration wizard.

However, at the end of this, the tapes were unreadable! Yikes!! Problems
with the variable vs. set block size.

Another emergency call to Veritas, and I was put in touch with Valerie
(from Australia. Ask for her by name, she ROCKS!!!!). She did some heavy
research (don't know why the first guy missed this), but she discovered
that Sun patch 108725-7 was created *specifically* for the IBM Ultrium
drives. The patch is actually at a much higher rev now that the ticket
Valerie found, but I installed the latest rev (-16, I think), and bingo
bango, it works perfectly! We are now running with the Sun device
drivers and can now use compression as we should be able to!

And since I had to start from scratch on the devices/drivers, I actually
did the drive reconfig with the "boot -r" which cleaned up the devices
and gave me a chance to switch SCSI ID's on the drives (which were
creating an odd problem of VDC reporting that the system has six drives,
not four). The SCSI ID rework cleared up that problem. I've also noticed
that some backups that were slower before seem to finish quicker now
(because of the compression? Probably...).

Thanks again to Veritas (and Valerie. I'd marry her is I weren't already
married!).
