This is exactly the problem I had (also on a SunFire V480, NB 4.5 FP5),
and after 2 months with Veritas support, they never figured it out, so I
gave up and started using the "Multiple-Tape Catalog Backups" method
described in the System Administrator's Guide (page 181 in the 4.5 FP3
SA guide).

Part of the problem is that bpbackupdb does not respect the buffer sizes
you can set in SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS (instead defaults to 32k) but even more
than that I believe there is a bug somewhere. On a much smaller and
slower environment (Sun E250, DLT tapes) I could back up the catalog
much faster than I could on the 480.

The catalog was 200 GB (250 GB now), and now I'm able to back up the
catalog at 60 MB/s instead of 3 MB/s.
