The key thing with fibre channel over direct scsi connections is that you
can backup your large servers direct to tape without buying tape drives for
each server.

So instead of having 4 tape drives on 10 servers = 40 tape drives you have
4 or 8 tape drives shared between the 10 servers. The data rates are not
hugely different as the limiting factor is the tape speed (although you can
use virtual tape solutions which run at disk speed).

We run STK9940B fibre drives and get 30MB/second easily with Oracle and
other big files with good compression the drives go up to about 50MB/sec.
This lets us backup a 2-3TB a night with 10 tape drives.

Downside is that if something goes wrong it affects all of the backups.

Cheers
Ed

Hello,

I am investigating Fiber San solutions for our backups. I was wondering
if anyone has information on performance given a setup of this nature.

I have only seen documentation up until this point for Veritas San
Solutions, and some benefits, however benchmarks don't exist in the
document, and I haven't found any around the WWW.

We are looking to move into a Fiber Network with Fiber Drives.

Thank,
Jason
