it's also required if you want to "scale" the L700e by daisy-chaining two
of them together... and two is the limit.

that's one of my biggest complaints about the L700. here are my issues
with it...

1.) doors on 3 sides creates a horrible footprint and makes placing it in
a tight location more difficult.

2.) it also makes daisy-chaining difficult for them which is why they
limit it to two

3.) they require ACSLS to daisy-chain. Instead of putting the "brains" in
the software on the library (and others do it this way), they chose to put
it in an external application (typical of STK, IBM, EMC or other big
companies), which can "lock" you into their solution. Same thing with
"virtualizing" the library. Requires ACSLS (as pointed out below) instead
of putting the logic in the library itself.

4.) the second power supply is not "redundant" enough in my mind. the
robotics will work off of either power supply, the way it should be...
lose a power source or power supply/PDU and everything keeps working. the
drives are physically tied to one power supply or the other. and to make
matters worse, they don't bring this up when you're setting up the library
and half of the field techs seem to overlook it as well. I've seen
multiple libraries setup by STK where 10 or fewer drives are ordered and
the second power supply/PDU is ordered by the user as a standard practice
to always provide redundant power. the STK installer throws the drives in
without reconfiguring the power cables behind the power supplies and all
10 are tied to the same power supply. you lose that power source and the
robotics are fine but everything else dies!!!

all that said, they are reliable.

We have been using the L700 with SSO and LTO-2 drives for about 6 months.
Over all it has been good. We've had one bad drive and a micro-code issue.

ACSLS is only needed if you want to share the Lib. with other backup
systems.

There is a "lite" version of ACSLS for Windows called Horizon... something
or other (or at least there used to be). I'm sure one of the STK guys
would be glad to talk to you offline about it if you wish.

If someone told you that you HAD to have ACSLS in order to use SSO in
NetBackup, that was incorrect. It works just fine configured as a normal
library (e.g. TLD). Only one of the media servers will be the Robotic
Control Host, which is a single point of failute to some extent (doesn't
stop others from reading/writing to tapes already mounted, just can't do
anything with the robotics), but with ACSLS, unless you cluster it with
something, then that becomes your single point of failure.

We have an STK L700 for our NT environment. Works well for us. We are
using ACSLS to control the robot. ACSLS cannot be run on Windows which
introduces a support issue. However, its not been a problem for us.

At the moment we are not using SSO. I'd rather not use ACSLS for robot
control, but we implemented based on SSO in our future.

My 2 cents

Andrew

We are currently looking to add a tape library to our Veritas Netbackup
environment and would like some opinions on the 3 that we are currently
choosing between.
All would be LTO2 drives in a SAN environment.

1. HP Akula
2. Storage Tek L700 - L700E
3. ADIC Scalar i2K

Any and all comments on these libraries would be appreciated. ( i.e. Works
great or Hate one because of problems, lack of vendor support etc. )
