Hi Dave,
=20
I currently use a StoraeTek 9714 to backup my NetApp system. Yes you will n=
eed to have a dedicated drive attached to the NetApp. If your library only =
has two drives, then effectively you now only have one drive for all your c=
lient systems and one for the NetApp system. Also to consider, the Nightly =
backup is still running and an urgent restore is required - you only have a=
single drive to do both! (see below for a possible work around for the res=
tore).
=20
Another method to backup the Filer, could be via NFS mounts and not using N=
DMP, and therefore not 'losing' a drive to the Filer, BUT considering the=
amount of data that the Filers store I wouldn't consider this option, drag=
ing many GBytes of data over the network !!!
=20
I'm unsure what you mean by "3-way ndmp backups" ?
=20
Also if you backup data via NDMP from the NetApp, you are will be restricte=
d in it's recovery. It must be restored via NDMP, this can be a problem not=
being able to restore to another non-NDMP client machine!! (HOWEVER - it i=
s possible to recover an NDMP backup via a SUN system, which you have). I h=
ave got some notes on how to restore NDMP backups via a SUN system.
=20
I have a dedicated drive to my NetApp , but I also have 4 other drives I ca=
n use. I think that the NetApps are "the best thing since sliced bread", fa=
st, reliable, easy to manage ......
=20
Hope this helps.=20
