In the HP-UX realm, probably with others as well, with backups on the
network with 100BT I'll occasionally see these when the nic cards/s on the
master media server are being heavily used with multiple backups coming down
the 100BT to the master/media server causing a process to timeout while
trying to connect to bprd or bpdbm.
These are most common when the network or the client server is heavily
loaded.
A quick check is:
# netstat -p tcp |grep retrans
If have a very high number of retransmit timeouts show up, you may want to
space out your network backup times or look to offloading to multiple
subnets for balancing.
