Per the handout, here's everything about checkpoint restarts - since they
seem to be a hot topic:
* Allows a failed/suspended filesystem backup (as is the case for
'Checkpoint-Restart for Restores) to be resumed from the last checkpoint
created before the failure/suspension occurred.
* Supported only for Unix (Standard) and Windows (MS-Windows-NT)
client types (policy types)
* Netware (standard policy) not supported
* Checkpoints created at file boundaries - not within a file.
* Other job types: catalog backup, duplication, Vault, import,
synthetic - will not support Checkpoint-Restart
* Checkpoint-Restart feature supported for frozen image backups using
Local Host backup method
* NOT supported for Media Server Copy (MSC/off-host copy), Third
Party Copy (3PC), Persistent Frozen Image (PFI), Fastrax, or Flashbackup.
* Backup portion of 5.0 'Disk Staging' feature will support
checkpointing but the 'migration to tape' will not support checkpointing in
this release
* Synthetic backups will not support checkpointing in this release
* Definitions
* Suspended - a job state that results when a user
(administrator) suspends (pauses) a job.
* Incomplete - a job state that results when a backup job
(associated with a backup policy with Checkpoint-Restart enabled) fails.
* Resume(d) - an incomplete or suspended backup (or restore) job
can be resumed
* The 'resumed' job will have the same JOB ID (in jobs database)
as the incomplete/suspended job.
* Restart(ed) - a job that is in 'DONE' state may be restarted
from the beginning.
* A 'restarted' job has a a NEW JOBID
(there's a flowchart diagram that I can't reproduce here)
* Feature is enabled on a 'per-policy' basis but is disabled by
default.
* Checkpoint time interval (in minutes) is a configurable parameter
per backup policy
* Default is 15 minutes
* Minimum of 5 and maximum of 180 minute intervals
* Netbackup scheduler will automatically resume incomplete backups
from last checkpoint up to the configured number of retries
* The backup must be resumed using the same Media Server in use prior
to going to 'suspended' or 'incomplete'.
* A checkpointed job can stay in the 'incomplete' state only for a
configurable (Netbackup Global Attribute) amount of time before it will be
moved to the 'done' state.
(lastly, there's a screenshot of the policy GUI screen showing the checkbox
to enable a Checkpointed backup)

Here's a quick list, pulled from a Veritas presentation last week. Caveat
emptor, this is pre-release info & subject to change:
# Checkpoint restart for backups
Allows failed or suspended backup to be restarted. UNIX & Windows policy
types only.
-> I would like to see if a backup stream failed, it can allow to resume
backup from the point of failure, no re-starting the whole backup stream
again. For example if I backup 5GB of data, at the point of 4.9GB written
and client get rebooted or other, the backup failed. I can start or manual
start just to backup another 0.1GB. That will be fantastic right :)
Cheers..
Robert
