If you're going to handle robotic control of the L700 over fibre, you will
need to zone out this control path. Only one of the servers will have
robotic control, and the zones should be setup so that server is the only
one that can see the robotic control port.
As for zoning out the rest, personally I still prefer to have a dedicated
HBA for tape. Tape devices tend to generate more "noise" on a SAN than disk
devices and I prefer to limit this so it only impacts the tape SAN. If the
customer is unwilling to spend the money for the extra HBA in each server, I
would at a minimum create a separate zone for the tape drives.
One other thought on the "gotchas" in this design is the use of SSO. I
still tend to be cautious in my use of SSO because when you move in this
direction, you're creating a direct dependency between your important
servers and the health of your tape devices. SSO has gotten much more
stable over the years, but there may still be times when you have to reboot
these servers to clear up a problem with the tape drives. I certainly use
SSO and like the functionality that it provides, just make sure the customer
understands there could be circumstances where the servers will have to be
rebooted to clear up problems in the backup system.

Hello everyone:
I just wanted to solicit some advice as to how to proceed deploying SSO in
the following environment. Any comments from anyone actively supporting a
similar configuration would be more than welcome.
Here's the scenario:
1. Customer currently has Brocade 2800 switch with no zoning.
2. Customer has 6 WIN2K hosts with Emulex HBA's attached to Brocade.
3. Customer has Compaq EVA Array attached to Brocade.
4. Customer has existing STK L700 with 6 DLT8000 Drives.
5. Will be installing Crossroads 10K and HVD SCSI attaching L700 Robot &
drives to Crossroads 10K & to Brocade.
6. Customer only has a single HBA in each WIN2K host and wants to use the
single HBA in each WIN2K host to attach to both existing Compaq array and
L700 via Crossroads 10K.
7. Customer will be using Veritas NetBackup DataCenter v4.5 with Shared
Storage Option to dynamically allocate DLT8000 drives among the six WIN2K
hosts for backup.
Do you see any "gotchas" in deploying this scenario?
Should we establish a seperate zone and or fabric strictly for tape?
Should we be using a dedicated HBA just for tape?
Are there going to be any difficulties using the same HBA for both tape &
disk with no zoning?
Are there issues with short packets (disk) and long packets (backup)
happening on the same HBA?
Please let me know your thoughts regarding this configuration.
Thanks in advance,
Daryl Katauskas
