Once a day sounds extreme - I'd think you'll do more damage from the
slightly abrasive cleaning cartridge than good at that rate.

Usually you choose to use Netbackup cleaning or Library cleaning. If you
use Library cleaning, set your drive cleaning frequency to "0" so Netbackup
will not attempt to clean and set the NO_TAPE_ALERT entry. For
Netbackup-driven cleaning, either use tapealert cleaning (library flags
server, NB schedules a cleaning) or frequency-based cleaning (clean every X
hours of operation per drive).

In my experience, which does not include the L180 library, if you use
library-based cleaning, there's reserved slots for the cleaning tape that NB
doesn't see - to use both NB-driven cleaning & library cleaning, you'd have
to have two cleaning tapes, one in the library reserved slot & the other in
a regular data-tape slot.

All this being said, if you want to make NB clean a drive on demand, use the
tpclean command. More specifically, "tpclean -C <drivename>" (beats my why
Veritas chose drive name when almost every other command uses drive index).
Write a loop around "vmoprcmd -d ad"or "tpconfig -l" output to get the drive
name, feed it to tpclean & schedule by cron. Ta Da! Daily/weekly/whatever
cleaning.

Howdy,

I've been using Netbackup now for about 3 months and everything

is working great, but I'd like to automate the tape cleaning process.

The Library is an Storage Tek L180 with auto clean capability, but

according to Storage Tek, there is no way to increase the frequency

of the cleanings.

Therefore, I'd like to use Netbackup to schedule a tape cleaning once

a day, What's the best way to do this?

Thanks...James
