Hi ,
Install PHP to your Unix (or Win) machine it's better way to write scripts. 
It's very easy for
parsing files ,connecting DB 's , mailing and so. I wrote a script which finds 
a scratch tapes . It
works fine I can send e-mails any format MIME ,HTML etc. It's very usefull for 
operational jobs .
