Did this with a Nexsan ATABoy2 array attached to a Solaris master/media
server. Worked quite well until I ran out of space, 1.5TB can get
chewed up quick. It had a HVD/LVD converted on it so the bandwidth was
maxed at 40MB/sec but since it's not linear it performed very nicely.

Since then my successor has plans to upgrade it to fiber channel and add
capacity. The fiber channel aspect is connection only, the drives are
ATA. It continues to work well for him and he wants to build on it.
Since such array's are fairly inexpensive compared to STK and NetApp, if
the sole purpose of the disk is to act as a backup staging area I would
forgo the big names and grab a cheap 2-4tb array and hook it up with
glass (fiber).

I had Vault and made 2 tape copies of data on the disk, one stayed in
the library and the other went offsite. You can do this without Vault
and there is at least one other application I would recommend over
Vault, much cheaper too.

Has anyone out here implemented an ATA disk solution to do disk backups
with DataCenter 4.5? If so I would be interested in feedback. We are
considering both the STK BladeStore and the NetApp NearStore. Also, we
have an all Solaris master/media environment...
