We do both in-line copies and vault tape copies, and what we have found so
far is that the in-line certainly runs longer and quite a bit slower do to
the fact that you are pushing the same data to two different tape drives.
However, after some testing, we found that this was a far more acceptable
manner for creating offsite tapes for our larger servers (multiple volumes
in excess of 300GB). However, for our networked clients and smaller file
servers, we continue to vault tape copy during the day.
Let me warn you though, vaulting is EXTREMELY resource intensive, especially
on wintel boxes. We are running a Compaq(HP) Proliant ML 570 with Quad Xeon
700 processors and 2 GB of RAM, and the processors stay pegged at 90%+
during vaulting. I am in the process of adding more RAM to see if it makes
a difference (although I suspect it will be very minimal). If I could
choose another server for vaulting, I would consider an 8-way, and possibly
a Solaris box for the horsepower.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] 4.5 Vaulting In-Line Tape Copy
We are looking into this as the primary off-site/DR procedure of choice.
Can anyone speak to the "real" world usage of this process and indicate the
performance hit of the copy (two streams) vs the single stream backup
throughput?
Thanks,
