If you wish a multi-year retention that's not anticipated, you can define
your own retention periods under the global settings. Then do your backups
with this new retention level. You can use the "bpexpdate -recalculate"
command to change the retention of any existing backups that may not have
the correct retention.

To use a backup that has already expired, you'll have to import that tape.
It's a non-trivial process so I'll suggest reading the manual on it.

I would not depend on tape importation as an operational strategy for
managing long-term tape retention, rather I'd set the appropriate retention
to begin with & maintain the image catalog for the images.

There's a new feature in FP3 that has to do with catalog archiving for
long-term data retention but I have not done a thing with it yet.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Retention question

Hi,

I'm new to netbackup application. I read netbackup
sysadmin guide and come across a retention setting.
>From my reading it said, if the retention is expired,
I couldnt restore the data from the tape as the detail
is deleted from netbackup application. My question is,
I want to keep many years for all our monthly full
backup. How do I go about restoring the data back if
it's already expire?

Anybody could share their knowledge on this issue,
please? Thank you in advance.

regards,
Feroz
