yes, it is slow. that's why many people have rewritten it in Perl or just
cleaned up the code itself. In fact, veritas even wrote a technote on how
to clean it up. It basically is running bpmedialist into a file once and
grep'ing the file multiple times instead of running bpmedialist once for
each media id.
here is technote:

I personally just cleaned it up, but also added more functionality like
the ability to run it against only a certain robot or certain volume pool
and have added fields like expiration date and last write date, which I
use to determine which tapes are ejected and which ones stay.

hello.
Running the available media script sometimes is like running through thick
mud. I use the script's output to see what tapes are available so I can
reuse them. I want to bring back my tapes from a year ago and recycle
them.
I run available media on my Unix master, then ftp it to PC and put it into
EXCEL so I can pretty it up. Paper is better for me sitting next to a
pile
of tapes.
* What I'm looking for:
I would like to get a script that works faster than the available-media
* the script would include an output column for volume group and
expiration
date.
Jim
