I'd agree with Brian Chase and get some version control software in place.
It would be more efficient than doing recoveries, especially if the tape you
require is off site.

I work in a State Government Department (Australia) and I have to be able to
get information out of my Backups from 7 years ago, this is due to an Act of
Parliament (Government) that requires all data be retrievable for this
period of time. Part of the resume is to keep monthly backups as an
Archival, meaning that they are kept for ever!!

This theme is also filtering into e-mail that goes via the mail server, it
must be collected for archival purposes also. (I reckon that the tape
manufactures have had word to the politician to drum up a bit of business!!
LOL).
